The Restaurant Association is thrilled to announce Academy Chair (Oceania) for The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants, Alexandra Carlton as the keynote speaker for Ignite Hospo. With a career spanning two decades in journalism, Alexandra has covered a broad spectrum of topics from travel to women's issues to current affairs, but her primary passion has always been food.
Since beginning her side gig reviewing for Gourmet Traveller in 2009, Alexandra has established herself as a prominent figure in food journalism. She has contributed to Australia's leading food and travel publications including Gourmet Traveller, Qantas, The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, The WA Good Food Guide, Escape, and The Australian. In 2023, she was appointed as the Academy Chair (Oceania) for World's 50 Best Restaurants, overseeing Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Pacific Islands. Alexandra’s expertise spans the full spectrum of dining experiences, from grand 14-course degustations to casual takeout.
At Ignite Hospo 2024, Alexandra will delve into the criteria for selection in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, offering invaluable insights into what makes an occasion or establishment memorable. She will discuss the factors that drive interest in new dining spots and what this means for New Zealand restaurateurs and establishments. With a keen eye on how Kiwis can shine on the world stage, Alexandra will explore the steps needed to achieve and maintain international recognition.
A key aspect of Alexandra’s talk will be on sustaining recognition and avoiding the detrimental effects of "Star Drop," where losing a Michelin star can lead to severe backlash, staff departures, and rapid declines in bookings. Her insights will be crucial for venues aiming to maintain their prestige and customer base. Additionally, Alexandra will share her thoughts on whether she believes New Zealand has the potential to break into the World’s 50 Best.
